Input unit when editing LCA datasets
When adding or editing LCA datasets, the input unit of an activity generally remains unchanged. This helps prevent unintended changes to consumption and emission values.
The unit of the LCA dataset is displayed in the upper right corner when using the activity-based search:

Three cases may occur:
1. Units match exactly
The activity is created with an input unit, and the selected LCA dataset uses the same unit.
- The input unit and input value remain unchanged
- Emissions are calculated directly based on this unit
Example:
Input: 2 kg
LCA dataset: defined per kg
→ Input unit remains kg
2. Unit belongs to the same unit type
The activity is created with an input unit, and the LCA dataset uses a different unit of the same unit type.
- Input unit and input value remain unchanged
- Calculation is handled via automatic conversion within the same unit type
Example:
Input: 1000 kWh
LCA dataset: defined per MJ
→ Input unit remains kWh, emissions are internally converted accordingly
3. Different unit type
The activity is created with an input unit, and the selected LCA dataset uses a different unit type.
- ⚠️ The input unit is automatically adjusted
- ⚠️ The input value remains unchanged
- ⚠️ A notice is displayed
Example:
Input: 100 liters
LCA dataset: defined per kg
→ Input unit is automatically changed to kg

Unit types overview
Conversion is only possible within the same unit type. The following unit types are supported in ecoinvent:
| Unit type | Units |
|---|---|
| Energy | Wh, kWh, MWh, GWh, MJ, GJ, TJ |
| Weight | g, kg, t, short-ton, lb |
| Freight transport (mass-based) | tkm, tmi, short-ton-mi |
| Passenger transport | pkm, pmi |
| Distance | m, km, ft, mi, nmi |
| Volume | ml, liter, m³, gal, bbl, scf |
| Area | m², km², ft², ha |
| Nights | nights |
| Quantity | quantity |
