ISO 14067 - Overview and Activation

This article provides an overview of ISO 14067 in Climate Hub: what it covers, how it is applied to a PCF report, which system boundaries are available, which greenhouse gases are captured, and how the results are documented.

What is ISO 14067?

ISO 14067 is the foundational standard for quantifying Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs). It defines the requirements and guidelines according to which product-related greenhouse gas emissions are recorded and reported.

In Climate Hub, ISO 14067 forms the methodological basis of every PCF report. Additional standards such as Catena-X or PACT build on this foundation and supplement or tighten individual requirements.


How is ISO 14067 activated?

ISO 14067 is automatically active for every PCF report and does not need to be activated separately. You select additional standards when creating a report. The standard selection cannot be changed after the report has been created. The effect of adding an additional standard is described in the article Catena-X: Overview and Activation.


System boundaries

In line with ISO 14067, the Product Carbon Footprint can be captured partially within the Cradle-to-gate system boundary — covering the phases up to the point the product leaves the factory gate — or completely as Cradle-to-grave, taking all life cycle phases into account. A systematic overview of the different system boundaries can be found in the following figure.

Note: If ISO 14067 is the only active standard, you can freely choose the system boundary. Additional activated standards may restrict this choice — for example, with Catena-X the system boundary is fixed to Cradle-to-gate.


Greenhouse gases captured

In accordance with the current IPCC Assessment Report (AR6), all relevant greenhouse gases are quantitatively captured. Currently, results are presented as a total sum in CO2 equivalents (CO2e).

In the future, emissions will additionally be broken down by individual gas (CO2, CH4, N2O, HFC, PFC, SF6, NF3) where available, enabling more precise analysis and more differentiated reporting.

 

Results and PDF report

The results are compiled into a standalone PDF report that transparently documents both the methodological assumptions and the key results. In addition, the emission factors used are disclosed, including their sources. This gives users a reliable basis for climate reporting, product comparisons, or external communication.

Important: Comparing different PCFs is generally only possible if the functional unit and system boundaries are defined identically.
