PACT: Overview and Activation

This article provides an overview of the PACT standard in Climate Hub: what it is used for, how it is activated for a PCF report, what changes upon activation, and which areas are affected. For field-level details, please see the linked articles on Base Data and Allocation.

What is the PACT standard?

PACT (Partnership for Carbon Transparency) is an initiative aimed at standardizing the exchange of Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs) across companies. The PACT Methodology (Version 3.0) defines methodological requirements for the calculation, data quality, and verification of cradle-to-gate PCFs. This enables a consistent, comparable, and interoperable exchange of PCF data between companies across the value chain.

In Climate Hub, you can optionally activate the PACT standard for a PCF report. This fixes certain inputs and restricts the selection of individual methods.

 

How is PACT activated?

The standards to be applied are set when creating a report. In the "Create Report" dialog, select the desired standards under "Standards to be applied". ISO 14067 is preselected and always active; Catena-X or PACT can be added. The selected standards apply immediately.

Important: Only one of the two additional standards can be selected at a time — Catena-X and PACT cannot be selected simultaneously.

The standard selection cannot be changed after the report has been created — no additional standards can be added afterward. Therefore, make sure to define the required standards already at the time of report creation.


What does activating the PACT standard do?

If PACT is active for the report, it is displayed in the report header next to ISO 14067. It affects the following areas:

  • Base Data:
    • The system boundary (cradle-to-gate) and reference unit (declared unit) are fixed.
    • The available units are restricted. For certain units, the section "Additional Information in compliance with PACT" is displayed, containing the mandatory field Net weight per declared unit.
    • The cut-off rule and amount are pre-filled and must be adjusted to the respective PCF report.

  • Allocation: A reduced selection of allocation methods is available compared to ISO 14067. For details, see the article Allocation.
  • Emission Factors:
    • Only ecoinvent emission factors from versions 3.11 and 3.12 are available.
    • The following features of the ISO standard are not available in the PACT standard: search for spend-based emission factors, selection of a predefined standard activity via a dropdown menu, search for activity-based emission factors from databases other than ecoinvent.
In the Data tab, the input is the same for all standards. Standard-related differences are only shown here per emission factor: it indicates whether the respective emission factor is mandatory or optional for the selected standard.
