The Climate Hub enables the automated calculation of Scope 3 emissions.
The 15 Scope 3 categories according to the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard are recorded in the Climate Hub. They are presented and explained below:
Category | Description |
Upstream Scope 3 Emissions
3.1 Purchased goods and services | Emissions from the production of goods and services that the company purchases from other companies (e.g. raw materials, operating materials). |
3.2 Capital goods | Emissions generated during the production of the company's capital goods, such as machinery, vehicles and buildings. |
3.3 Fuel- and energy-related activities | Emissions from the purchase, production and transportation of fuels and energy used by the company in the reporting year that are not already included in Scope 1 and 2. |
3.4 Upstream transportation | Transportation of products purchased by the company in the reporting year between Tier 1 suppliers and the company's own operations in vehicles not owned by the company. Transportation between the company's operations in vehicles not owned by the company. |
3.5 Waste | Disposal and treatment of waste generated in the reporting company's operations during the reporting year. |
3.6 Business travel | Transportation of employees for business-related activities during the reporting year in vehicles not owned by the company. |
3.7 Employee commuting | Transportation of employees between home and work during the reporting year in vehicles not owned by the company. |
3.8 Upstream leased assets | Emissions from the use of rented or leased assets that are not owned by the company. |
Downstream Scope 3 Emissions
3.9 Downstream transportation | Transportation of products sold by the reporting company in the reporting year. |
3.10 Processing of sold products | Processing of intermediate products by downstream companies that the reporting company sold in the reporting year. |
3.11 Use of sold products | End use of goods and services sold by the reporting company. |
3.12 End-of-life treatment of sold products | Waste disposal and treatment of products sold by the reporting company at the end of their useful life. |
3.13 Downstream leased assets | Operation of assets owned by the reported company that were rented or leased to other companies in the reporting year. |
3.14 Franchises | Operation of franchises in the reporting year that are not included in Scope 1 and 2. |
3.15 Investments | Operation of investments in the reporting year that are not included in Scope 1 and 2. |
Predefined emission sources with predefined emission factors are assigned to these categories. To use these, the company can enter its consumption values in the Input column and select the unit of the input value. The emissions are then calculated automatically. These can be viewed in the display in the top right-hand corner for an initial assessment:
To ensure that vast quantities of emission sources are not assigned to the categories specified by the GHG Protocol, sub-categories have been introduced in the Climate Hub for Purchased goods and services and Capital goods. An overview is shown below.
Purchased goods and services:
- Paper - Prints
- Water
- Food - Drinks
- External datacenter
- Other purchased goods
- Other purchased services
- Packaging
Capital goods:
- Electronics
- Other capital goods
In category 3.3 Upstream emissions (Scope 1 - 2), however, nothing can be entered. The fields in the Input, Unit and Accuracy columns are therefore grayed out. Instead, the emissions from the upstream value chain of activities from Scope 1 and 2 are automatically calculated here.
Customer-specific activities can also be added using the Add own activity button in the bottom left-hand corner of each category. It is important that the emission sources are assigned to the correct category so that the total emissions of a category can then be output correctly.
When adding own activities, a clear description of the activity should be used. In addition, either a separate direct emission factor (factor direct) and its unit or the CO2 equivalents (CO2e direct, in tonnes) must be specified. The source from which this emission factor originates should furthermore be specified. The quantity of the individual gases can also be specified here.
If the emission factor is not known, a suitable factor can be imported from an external database using the Search factor (activity based) and (spend based) button. Please refer to chapter Scope 3: Search for activity-based emission factors and Scope 3: Search for spend-based emission factors.
Additionally, in categories 3.1.4 External Datacenter, 3.7 Employee Commuting and 3.14 Franchises, it is possible to enter electricity consumption. The appropriate emissions factor is automatically selected based on the specified country/region and year. To do this, go to Add own activity and select Electricity consumption.
When choosing Electricity-mix or 100% green energy, please enter the year and the country or region. Based on this information, a suitable emissions factor is determined — covering both direct emissions and upstream emissions (as for Scope 2 electricity). The upstream emissions include well-to-tank, transmission and distribution and well-to-tank of transmission & distribution. In the Climate Hub, all values are combined for clarity and displayed as a total emissions factor and total CO₂e value in tonnes.
If you select Individual CO2e factor instead, you will need to enter your own emission factor (Factor direct) and may optionally provide a source. In this case direct emissions are calculated using your custom factor. The upstream emissions are still determined automatically based on the selected year and country/region. A combined emission factor and total CO₂e value in tonnes will also be shown in this case.
In the tabs External Datacenter and Franchises, you can enter electricity consumption in various energy units. In the Employee Commuting tab, you can either specify electricity consumption in kWh or the distance traveled using an electric or plug-in vehicle.
